Protective Effect of Green Tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) against Prostate Cancer: From In Vitro Data to Algerian Patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Green tea (GT) has been studied for its effects as antioxidant and cancer-preventive agent. Epidemiological studies showed that GT consumption decreases the risk for prostate cancer (PC). To investigate whether erythrocyte oxidative stress (OS) is associated with PC and whether daily consumption of GT improves the oxidative phenotype, we performed a study in a group of Algerian PC patients, preceded by an in vitro study to characterize composition and antioxidant/antiproliferative activities of the GT used. This contained a high content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, demonstrating in vitro antioxidant activity and significant antiproliferative effect on human prostate cancer PC-3 cell line. Seventy PC patients and 120 age-matched healthy subjects participated in the study, with glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and catalase activity evaluated before and after GT consumption. The results showed a reduced GSH and catalase activity and a high level of MDA in erythrocytes from PC patients. The consumption of 2-3 cups per day of GT during 6 months significantly increased GSH concentration and catalase activity and decreased MDA concentration. In conclusion, GT significantly decreased OS in Algerian PC patients. Regular consumption of GT for a long period may prevent men from developing PC or at least delay its progression.

Effect of green tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) extract on sperm health parameters in adult rats treated with Bisphenol A
Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) disturbs male reproductive system performance via the production of free radicals. Green tea extract (GTE) is known as a potent antioxidant. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of co-treatment of BPA and GTE as an antioxidant on male reproductive system performance. Methods: Adult male rats were divided into 4 groups: control, Bisphenol A...
متن کاملGreen tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] extract reverses the despair behaviour in reserpinised and diabetic mice.
Green tea (C. sinensis) extract (GTE) dose dependently produced reversal of despair in normal, reserpinised and diabetic mice, thereby demonstrating an antidepressant effect. Although the exact mechanism is yet to be explored, the possible inhibition of catechol-o-methyl transferase and monoamine oxidase enzymes may be responsible for antidepressant activity of GTE.
متن کاملPhotosynthesis, Nitrogen Metabolism and Antioxidant Defense System in B-Deficient tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) Plants
Response of tea plants to B deficiency was studied in hydroponic medium under environmentally controlled conditions. Plants height, number of leaves and dry matter production of shoot and root were significantly decreased by B deficiency. Concentration of chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins and flavonoids was not affected by B deficiency in the young leaf, while a significant reduction of Ch...
متن کاملInvestigation of Consecutive Separating Arrangements of Bio active Compounds from Black Tea (Camellia sinensis) Residue
Every year lots of black tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) residue will produce in the factories. These residue are unusable whereas the bio active compounds can be extracted and used in the drag and food industries. Due to mentioned problems, this project was conducted years 2011 - 2012 with the aim to make a study on consecutive isolation of all bio active compounds from tea residu...
